Planning is under way to build 12 new hydroelectric dams along the Yangtze river in China’s southwest in the model of the giant Three Gorges dam. The government says that the local economy has been boosted by the first project. Residents in the area have seen their annual incomes more than double, the government says. Melissa Chan visits the river communities, in Yunnan province, who say the country’s second-largest infrastructure project has, in fact, had the opposite affect.
